On Wednesday 26th February 20 ALGSS’ers went to the Watford Colosseum to watch the recording of Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night G&S special introduced by Ken Bruce.
Richard Balcombe conducted the BBC concert orchestra and, to our delight, treated us to the overtures of Iolanthe and Yeomen of the Guard, and the sound of a 60 piece Orchestra playing live was wonderful.
The programme included other excerpts from Mikado, Pinafore,Gondoliers, Ruddigore, Pirates , Patience ,Uptopia and little heard reworked songs from The Sorcerer and Yeomen.
The Soloists were Victoria Joyce, Sylvia Clarke, Heather Shipp, Oliver White, Bruce Graham and Simon Butteriss supported by the Choir of London Voices.
It was a wonderful evening and the programme of 1 hour 57 minutes went all too quickly but we can hear it all again on Friday 7th March 8.00pm Radio 2 !
We managed to meet Simon Butteriss in the Bar after the performance and Gordon just happened to have his Camera at the ready for an interview!
